Education Benefit Gala – A Fundraising Event With Obama

Former United States president Barack Obama is slated to speak at the upcoming Education Benefit Gala Dinner on the 14 December 2019 presented by Novena Global Lifecare to help raise funds for four Singapore charities that support education and training for marginalised women and children from disadvantaged families.

South Central Community FSC will be one of the four beneficiaries through this Education Benefit Gala in support of our upcoming =DREAMS and other educational and learning support programmes for our lower income families.

=DREAMS

Nestled in a mature housing estate in the South Central district of Singapore, SCC works with the low-income and vulnerable families to navigate the barriers they face in accessing health, housing, employment, and education systems. Recognising that mitigating disadvantages is not enough to equalise opportunities, we leverage on the community to activate mutual help through social connections and inclusiveness with the aim of empowering the families while developing the full potential of the next generation for transformative change.

To eradicate the reproduction of entrenched poverty, we need to believe in the potential of the next generation to excel and be committed to nurturing their dreams and aspirations as a community. Guided by this strong belief, our upcoming  =DREAMS is designed to nurture a child’s full potential through holistic development with boarding residence, child-centric integrated care, and mentorship. Through this increased and sustained education opportunity, we hope that children from low-income families can boldly pursue their life’s dreams.

=DREAMS - Statistics

Only 11% of children from our families served end up in a better educational strata at the Secondary school level as compared to the National Average of 61% who are able to progress into an Express Stream Cohort.

This means they have lesser access to equal opportunities and limited support to help level the playing field.

=Dreams aim to change this to a much higher percentage for those children we serve under our programme to reach the national average as a medium term goal and better as a long term goal.
