This is an inspiring account of Mas, a mother and member of Goodwill Mummies. She overcame unanticipated obstacles with the steadfast support of fellow community mothers.
“In October of last year, I was involved in a bad accident that required a lot of surgery that racked up a huge medical bill for my family. My husband was out of a job, I have five children, and we had just moved out of our rental apartment to a BTO in Punggol.
I was very worried for my family when the accident happened, especially for my children. We could not afford to buy food when I was unable to bring in an income due to my absence from work.
This made me feel tremendously sad. In addition, I also hit a low point and was very frustrated. I could not even perform simple tasks like turning on the stove as a result of my injuries!
But thankfully, the Goodwill Mummies stepped in. They checked in on me while I recovered, they prepared meals for me and my family, and they even helped me take care of my children. What is also amazing is that my husband stepped up and took over the usual childcare duties and even learnt how to change the baby’s diapers. Even my daughter stepped up and learnt to cook.
I have never been one for social gatherings, but I am delighted that the Goodwill Mummies encouraged me to participate. With their support and my continued commitment, I learnt to rely on others for help. Being a stay- at -home mom can be exhausting and isolating, it can even lead to one feeling sad all the time.
My recent experience has shown me that with the help of the community and people around you, we can all emerge from adversity, stronger and better!
I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Goodwill Mummies, for turning my misfortune into a blessing. Thank you for your assistance and encouragement. I will always be grateful to you. To pay it forward, I am simply a phone call away!”
